ALLIANCE for RETIRED AMERICANS, National website: Alliance for Retired Americans

ALLIANCE for RETIRED AMERICANS

South Carolina Chapter

Dear Horry County PRIDE Supporter:

Pam and I want to tell you about a new organization we're involved with, why we're excited about it, and why we think it's important to YOU and the infrastructure and natural resource goals you support through Horry County PRIDE.

Last summer we were asked to help with the creation of a new statewide organization—the South Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans, a new affiliate of an eight year old national organization, the Alliance for Retired Americans.

The national Alliance is a unique organization that works to protect and promote the health and economic security of America’s seniors, strengthen families, and build thriving communities. Their goal is to educate, energize, and mobilize seniors to make a difference through community and political activism.

After some investigation we accepted—not because we didn't have enough to do—but because we saw an opportunity to dramatically increase the number of activists working together to bring positive change to Horry County. You probably won't be too surprised when we tell you we were elected co-presidents.

Now you may ask why we are involved with state and national organizations when there's plenty to do here in Horry County. Well, we have at least SIX GOOD REASONS:

1. Infrastructure and natural resource problems are COUNTY, STATE, and NATIONAL problems.

2. Legislation enacted in HORRY COUNTY, COLUMBIA and WASHINGTON are the source of many of these problems.

3. SENIORS and RETIREES constitute the largest part of current and future population growth in HORRY COUNTY.

4. SENIORS and RETIREES have a history of social and political activism dating back to the 50s and 60s.

5. The SC Alliance is the only organization we know of in South Carolina dedicated to SENIOR AND RETIREE ACTIVISM.

6. With the national Alliance we have access to research, legal advice, and professional organizers—all support we do not enjoy with Horry County PRIDE.

What we plan to do is use the COMBINED RESOURCES of Horry County PRIDE, the SC Alliance, and the national Alliance to promote positive change.

ACTION REQUESTED

If you ARE a senior interested in joining with other seniors to protect and promote your health and economic security on the national and state level, please consider becoming an Individual Member of the national Alliance (see below).

If you are NOT a senior and interested in adding your support to a larger effort on the infrastructure and natural resource issues, please consider becoming an Individual member of the national Alliance (see below).

If you belong to an organization interested in supporting senior activism and/or infrastructure and natural resources activism, please consider affiliating your organization with the Alliance. (see below).

There are two ways you can indicate your support:

1. ORGANIZATIONAL AFFILIATION. Invite us to speak to an organization you belong to (HOA, church, community, environmental, etc.) about becoming an Organizational Affiliate Member. Horry County PRIDE, the Horry County League of Women Voters, a women's Sunday School class from the Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, and the SC Retired Firefighters are already organizational affiliate members.

2. COMMUNITY ADVOCACY NETWORK MEMBERSHIP. Become an Individual Member of the national Alliance by filling out the attached application form and mailing in your $10 membership fee.

* Please email CCLR at co-chair@cclittleriver.org to request that we email a membership form to you, as we are unable to attach it to our website at this time.

By forming alliances with like-minded individuals and organizations, we can dramatically increase the impact of all of our voices. We hope the above is clear and meaningful. If you have questions, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

There is great respect and appreciation here for you,

Julie and Pam
